For the whole month of June, the Madeira Atlantic Festival takes over the city of Funchal. The event, which usually kicks off Madeira’s summer season, is made up of a number of initiatives. The musical pyrotechnic presentations, which take place on four Saturdays in a row, are by far the most popular. The pier outside of Pontinha was chosen as a beautiful setting for the spectacular displays. For over 20 minutes, each pyrotechnic musical extravaganza invades the sky over the harbour, attempting to outshine the others. The tournament is over, and the winner is customarily presented with a trophy by public vote.
