Câmara de Lobos is a city on the south coast of Madeira Island and the county seat of the parish. Câmara de Lobos is a municipality in the state with a population of around 35,000 people living in a 51.82 km2 area.
The name of the parish stems from the fact that at the time of the island’s discovery, a large number of sea lions could be seen in the cove, which still exists today. These animals are currently only seen on the south coast of the island on rare occasions, with a colony protected in the Desert Islands.
Fishing, agriculture, with a focus on wine production, trade, services, and industry are the parish’s main economic activities.
Between 1420 and 1424, Joo Gonçalves Zarco, the navigator who discovered the island, lived in Câmara de Lobos. This was the first settlement in Madeira, founded by Joo Gonçalves Zarco himself, and was granted freguesia in 1430.

The fishermen who paint the bay with their picturesque and highly distinctive boats – the “Xavelhas” – owe their fame to this land of fisherman, whose main competence is fishing for black scabbardfish. Winston Churchill, the former British Prime Minister, painted this remarkable picture when he was still alive.

This facility has recently been renovated and modified to hold cultural activities, and it includes a lovely garden with spectacular views of the city, the sea, and the surrounding countryside, including Cabo Giro.
