Funchal, Madeira’s capital, is located on the south coast of the island of Madeira, in a harbor bathed in the Atlantic Ocean.
This town, which has been since August 21, 1508, owes its name to a sweet-smelling wild herb known as “Foeniculum Vulgare,” often known as fennel [funcho], which was plentiful at the time of its establishment.
Funchal is the archipelago of Madeira’s principal tourist, cultural, and commercial center. This city offers a diverse range of leisure activities, including museum tours, monument visits, and other landmark visits, as well as walks through its gorgeous gardens, walks along the Funchal Marina, shopping, and going out at night to bars and nightclubs.
The Municipality of Funchal has built an amphitheater.
The Municipality of Funchal spans along a slope from sea level to the Pico de Areeiro, at an elevation of 1 818 meters, in the shape of an amphitheater.
According to the 2011 census, Funchal has 111,892 residents divided across ten parishes: Imaculado Coraço de Maria, Monte, Santa Luzia, Santa Maria Maior, Santo António, So Gonçalo, So Martinho, Sâo Pedro, Sâo Roque, and Sé.
