Machico was established as a town on August 2, 1996, and it now has a population of 20,000 people spread throughout 68 square kilometers.
According to legend, Robert Machim and Anna d’Arfet sought sanctuary here over a century before this discovery. The name of this city was derived from a misinterpretation of the word Machim.
Machico Bay welcomes you to take a stroll while taking in the breathtaking views of the sea and land. The Pico de Facho Belvedere, located to the east of the Machico valley, offers panoramic views of the island’s central peaks all the way to the Ponta de Sao Lourenço.
