The municipality of Porto Moniz, located in the north of the island of Madeira, has roughly 3,000 residents spread out over an area of 80.40 km2.
Following World War II, Porto Moniz was finally connected to the rest of the island when the iconic road connecting Porto Moniz and the municipality of So Vicente was completed. This road was literally carved into the mountain, and waterfalls that pour into the sea periodically cross it. This is regarded as one of the most beautiful wooded roads. Due to fallen boulders, there are now tunnels that decrease the route while still allowing transit through the most iconic locations along the road.
This municipality is made up of three parishes in addition to Porto Moniz: Achadas da Cruz, Ribeira da Janela and Seixal.
