Ribeira Brava is a municipality on the island’s south coast with a total area of 65.10 km2 and a population of 13 375 people. On May 28th, 1928, Ribeira Brava was designated as a village. Agriculture is the country’s main source of income; sweet potatoes, beans, vegetables, some cereals, fruit, and wine are all produced from the soil.
The Church of So Bento, in the village of Ribeira Brava, was built in the fourteenth century and features exquisite panels with a definite Flemish influence, depicting the Virgin and Child, So Bento and So Bernardo. So Bento is the patron saint of Ribeira Brava, and the locals have a special devotion to him.
On the 29th of June, this village hosts one of the island’s most popular festivals , in the honour of Saint Peter .
