Santana is a municipality on Madeira’s north coast with a population of roughly 8,800 inhabitants and a land area of 96.2 km2.
The town’s name comes from a primitive chapel dedicated to Santa ‘Ana, which gave birth to the current church.
Because the municipality was unreachable by water and land, its residents were able to preserve features that had not been influenced by the outside world. The unique architectural style of their cottages with thatched roofs, known as “casinhas de Santana,” is one evidence of this isolation (little houses of Santana).
The tourism industry is currently the county’s primary source of revenue.
The Madeira Theme Park and the Rocha do Navio Natural Reserve are both located here.
The municipality of Santana was designated as a “Biosphere Reserve” by UNESCO in June 2011, recognizing the diversity of an environment that tries to balance biodiversity protection with sustainable use. This reserve has a land component that covers the entire municipality above sea level, as well as a marine component that contains a diverse range of natural and distinctive human, landscape, environmental, and cultural values of local, regional, national, and worldwide significance.
Biosphere walking pathways stretch more than 120 kilometers in Santana, allowing visitors to appreciate the great natural heritage, contemplate the manicured surroundings, enjoy nature, meet the cultural diversity of the sites, and interact with the local inhabitants. Vereda’s pedestrian pathways can be found here.
The Vereda do Pico Ruivo, Levada do Rei, and Levada do Caldeiro Verde pedestrian pathways are all located here.
This county and city are made up of six parishes: Arco de So Jorge, Faial, Ilha, Santana, So Jorge, and So Roque do Faial.
